It is while we sleep that the body carries out it's healing work, restoring and maintaining homeostasis. We spend approximately one third of our lives sleeping on a mattress. The quality of our mattress is therefore, of paramount importance in our resting times and for our recuperation of energy and our restoration of health. No other material has such astounding body-supporting qualities as natural latex. Its high point elasticity means that it only yields at points where it is placed under strain and springs back immediately when one changes the lying position. Thus, the whole of the body is supported naturally, spine, shoulders, hips, neck, head etc., allowing the body to fully relax and carry out it's healing and repair work without restrictions. A good mattress should adapt to the shape of the person lying on it, regardless of the person's sleeping position. Natural latex does this immediately and does not need the body to 'warm up' the mattress before this can happen, unlike synthetic cold foam mattresses.

100% Natural Latex is, obviously, natural, and comes from a plant-based sustainable source. Rubber trees (see below) are grown in plantations, which feed on the greenhouse gas CO2, helping to reduce levels, and they also produce oxygen, which we need to breathe. This is nature, and how nature works simply to maintain balance amongst all living things. The energy consumed in producing a natural latex mattress is approximately 10% of the amount of energy required to produce a synthetic cold foam mattress.

Sleeping on metal-sprung mattresses can interfere with the body's natural healing process if the bedroom is subjected to EMF radiation from electrical wiring, electronic equipment, and especially microwave radiation emissions from phone masts, DECT telephones and any other Wi-Fi, W-MAX equipment. If the bedroom is exposed to any form of microwave radiation, or an electrical appliance is close to the spring mattress, the metal core construction can not only form a circuit with the electrical or magnetic field close by and pass on this voltage, and microwave radiation emissions, onto the entire bed. In other words the mattress can become an antenna, and measurements of voltage levels in spring mattresses are often too high.

This means that the body is constantly being subjected to electrostress. This can interfere with the quality of our sleep. Additionally, the body has to constantly expend energy that it would otherwise utilise for essential repair and healing work. Therefore, important repair and healing work, can, and often is overlooked by the body due to vital energy reserves becoming depleted dealing with EMFs radiated from the metal springs in the mattress.

ABOUT ABACA ORGANIC MATTRESSES

Rhiannon Rowley has been making mattresses in West Wales since 1989. The desire to create a natural bedding range grew as Rhiannon saw at first hand the toxic cocktail that is routinely present in conventional mattresses. There was already a clear need for natural bedding for people with a range of conditions including various allergies and ME. More than just a natural alternative, Rhiannon wanted to create truly luxurious organic bedding. And so began a journey to find pioneers and artisans around the world to help her on her quest.

Initially, Rhiannon found organic cotton growers in Turkey and India, worked with the British Wool Marketing Board to source Welsh organic wool, sought out Specialist wool scourers who wash and grade the wool and commissioned organic processors who turn the raw wool into wool pads. It is in her small workshop in West Wales that each mattress is carefully put together. Hand stitching and finishing means that every mattress is intimately checked for quality before it makes its final journey into someone’s home.

Natural latex comes from the creamy sap of the Heava tree. Harvesting the sap does not damage the tree, making this a truly sustainable product. After harvesting, the sap is cleanly processed to make the pads which provide the core of the Abaca Ramsey mattress. Latex is a wonderful material for a mattress because it moulds to the shape of your body in all the right places. It can be particularly useful for people with stiff or sore joints, as it gently supports you, allowing relaxation and a good nights sleep. We add layers of soft organic wool to the latex then cover it all with an organic cotton cover which is unbleached and undyed. Hand tufting completes the mattress to give you the feel and look of luxury. No foam, no artificial fire retardant, just pure natural materials.
